Best Red Yeast Rice contains rice that has been naturally fermented with red yeast (Monascus purpureus) according to traditional methods. Produced in the U.S., this product is similar to red yeast rice that has been used in culinary applications in Asia since at least 800 A.D. It is considered beneficial for adult men and women when taken as part of a lifestyle program that includes regular exercise and a healthy diet.

Do not use this products if you are pregnant or nursing, have liver disease, are allergic to soy or rice, or have had major surgery or organ transplant surgery within the last six weeks. Discontinue use immediately if muscle pain and tenderness or flu-like symptoms occur. If you are taking prescription medications, consult a physician before taking this product.

Suggested Use: Take 1 capsule twice daily, with or without food. Do not take more than 4 capsules in a 24-hour period.

Other Ingredients: Non-organic vegetable (polysaccharide) capsule.

In response to Ann: The muscle soreness you experienced is a direct side effect of the red yeast rice. Red yeast rice is practically the same as the prescription drugs known as the statins. They deplete the level of coenzyme Q10, which can affect muscle function. If you take this supplement, you should probably also take Coenzyme Q10. In fact, this supplement should probably contain it (but it doesn't). Be careful and do some research on this product, it should be used like a prescription drug.

I first bought this some years ago on the recommendation of my physician to help lower my colestoral rather than using prescription medication. The health food store I used suggested this brand. By using it in conjunction with a liquid herbal mix call OCM my colestarol was lowered enough where medication was not required. I buy from My Nature Market because it is less expensive than at my health food store.

I took this product twice a day for about 2 weeks before I started getting muscle soreness. I did not realize it came from this product so I kept on taking it (to lower my cholesterol). When I went to my cardiologist and told him about my muscle soreness, he said to quit taking this product immediately. It has been almost 2 weeks since I quit taking it and I still hurt but not as bad as I did. How long will this take to clear up? Can anyone answer me? It did lower the cholesterol and I am wondering if I could take just one a day and not have this problem.
