Description
Chromium Picolinate
Chromium Picolinate (Self Health). Chromium, an essential dietary mineral, plays a central role in how the body uses insulin to burn sugars, carbs, fats, and proteins. Chromium is essential for the normal activity of insulin, the key hormone involved in burning food for energy. Symptoms of Chromium deficiency, including elevated blood glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, and triglyceride, can resemble those of syndrome X. This doesn't mean that a lack of Chromium alone causes diabetes, but low chromium intake likely contributes to diabetes.
Chromium is an essential mineral that is significantly reduced in the American diet due to over-processing of foods. Humans require Chromium in trace amounts, although its mechanisms of action in the body and the amounts needed for optimal health are not well defined
Chromium is known to enhance the action of insulin, a hormone critical to the metabolism and storage of carbohydrate, fat, and protein in the body Chromium appears to be directly involved in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism as well.
Chromium is widely distributed in the food supply, but most foods provide only small amounts (less than 2 micrograms per serving). Meat and whole-grain products, as well as some fruits, vegetables, and spices are relatively good sources. In contrast, foods high in simple sugars like sucrose and fructose are low in Chromium.
Eating a variety of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, meats, and milk and milk products should provide sufficient chromium. In certain cases, however, fortified foods and dietary supplements may be useful sources of Calcium.
