The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a substance that's found naturally in the body and helps convert food into energy. Dr. Roland Stocker of the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia stated, in an article about the potential health benefits of CoQ10, Ubiquinol inhibits lipid peroxidation in biological membranes and in low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and it also protects membrane proteins against oxidative damage. In layman's terms, it is a particularly important antioxidant.

Natural News reported about ubiquinol saying that increased levels of energy and improved overall health were proven benefits of the reduced form CoQ10 supplement. They mentioned that the journal Biofactors published a study in 2008 that was conducted by research scientists at East Texas Medical Center and Mother Francis Hospital in Texas. Researchers noted that patients with chronic heart failure often fail to achieve adequate plasma levels of unreduced CoQ10 even at doses as high as 900 mg per day. Unfortunately, what this means for those heart patients is limited clinical improvement of their condition. Seven patients with plasma CoQ10 levels too low to be productive who were receiving an average dose of unreduced CoQ10 of 450 mg per day were increased to 580 mg per day of ubiquinol.

ubiquinol decresing with ageOn average, the echocardiogram tests measured an improvement from 22 percent to 39 percent, and patients clinical statuses were improved from class IV to class II. Researchers concluded that the ubiquinol form of CoQ10 dramatically improved absorption in patients with severe heart failure, and the improvement in plasma CoQ10 levels is correlated with clinical improvement and improvement in measurement of left ventricular function.

Another study, done at the University of Kiel in Germany and published in the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition, focused on the possibility that CoQ10 could be used as an anti-inflammatory. Scientists found that pre-incubation of cells with ubiquinol resulted in a decrease in inflammation.
